I have taken the photo with Mr. ARTHUR MOSS, Project Director of Suntec City and Mr. RICE, the General Manager of Permasteelisa in Singapore.
PERMASTEELISA – My 1st Million
In the UOB project, I deal directly with Mr. Massimo Colomban
“Sunny we walk 3 steps ahead but you walk 20 steps ahead!” – Massimo Colomban
If I have the energy I will explain what he meant by 20 steps. (wait for my little book.)
But for the SUNTEC CITY project, my agreement is with Mr. Lucio Mafessanti
“Sunny if we teach you the technical skill you will be our next competitor because without any knowledge of Curtain walling you managed to seal the deal effortlessly.” – Lucio Mafessanti
I used my brain and wit to secure the contract on behalf of the contractor.
IN MY DREAM I THREW $1 MILLION TO THE CROWD AND I SCREAMED OUT LOUD,
“IF MONEY IS WHAT YOU WANT YOU CAN HAVE IT BUT DON’T YOU ALL KNOW YOU ARE CHASING THE WRONG VALUE IN LIFE BECAUSE LIFE IS NOT ABOUT CHASING AFTER MONEY FOR MONEY SAKE! THERE IS MUCH MORE BEAUTY IN LIFE.”
BANKING TO BUDDHISM: FIVE LESSONS FROM A WOMAN WHO LEFT THE CITY FOR BHUTAN http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/banking-buddhism-city-london-bhutan-five-lessons-woman-learnt-emma-slade-set-free-a7680931.html
After reading Emma story, you will understand why I needed to take this spiritual journey. Since a young child I wanted to chase my dream as my career but many had told me without money how can I succeed? Before you can begin many had allowed their brain to stagnant their growth potentials due to fear because the system created make you dependent on them for the rest of our life and I make sure I am not the one caught in the deadly system!
ONE OF MY FRIEND GAVE ME THE BOOK ‘THE ALCHEMIST’ BECAUSE SHE SAID THAT MY LIFE IS I LIKE THE BOOK:)
PERMASTEELISA REFUSED TO HONOUR OUR CONTRACT AND IF THEY HAD THEN THERE IS NO WORLD HARMONY DAY
I have maintained my stand in regard to my name because I refused to be structure by society, I was very confident that people would judge me based on my character and not by my new name ‘Sunflower’. But how wrong I was, when in 1990 I represented Permasteelisa an Australia sub-contractor based in Sydney to tender for the curtain-walling project in Suntec City?
I have learned from others that all the consultants, especially Mr. Robert Heintges and DP architect were not happy with me because in their professional eyes with a name ‘Sunflower’, means I was not a serious person. If you were involved in tendering a project worth about $200million, I supposed the name was a liability but if you were involved in a charity show of flower arrangement then I guessed this name will be an asset and it was. Moreover I was not a technical person; therefore they said that I was not qualified to represent Permasteelisa. As though they got the right to decide!
The general manager Mr. Chua Yong Hai from Suntec City told Permasteelisa bosses that this project was very highly political and it was not wise to have a woman to represent them. The boss from Permasteelisa Mr. Massimo Colomban told me that Mr. Chua said that in construction field, dealing with a woman was not good for their image. He told Mr. Colomban that Permasteelisa is a big company, they didn’t need a woman to help them to get the project. Mr. Colomban said that I must keep a low profile, as the Singaporean professionals cannot accept me. They felt an insult to be talking to someone who was not technical in this field. Just for Mr. Chua information, without my involvement in UOB Plaza, Permasteellisa might not be able to get the curtain-walling project even though one of the UOB’s subsidiary represented them. JV Kajima from Japan and Coneer from Canada was supposed to get the contract but because it was not signed on the dot, due to my quick wit and intelligent, I was able to rescue the project for Permasteelisa right under their nose.
To cut the story short, I had managed to secure the curtain-walling project in Suntec City in the late1990 on behalf of Permasteelisa. When they refused to honor the $1.3million fee that was entitled to me, instead of suing and allowed it to drain my energy and spirit, I questioned God why this was happening to me again? It was very naïve of me to believe that after securing the project on behalf for Permasteelisa, they would honor the contract and I will realize my dream of giving $1million away and I will die a happy woman. But I guessed that was not God planned for me as he got many exciting adventures waiting for me to discover.
How simply I see the business world then but not anymore now? How idealistic all my dreams and thoughts were then and still is now? I can only asked God why, why, why? And “Why is life so unfair to me when I have worked so hard for it?” I cried to myself. “Why is all this happening to me, was I not supposed to give S$1million away as I saw it in my dream? When I was so closed, why did it slipped away, were you trying to tell me something? Do you have another plan for me instead of giving away the S$1million? I was waiting for an answer from Him, but I realized it would not come straight away, as I got to keep on walking like the ‘Alchemist’.
In order to succeed I know that I must persevere and hold on tight to my dream and constantly carry these Great Virtues – Faith, Hope and Charity and held this value and belief close to my heart, to help me pull through this long, tiring, lonely and close to impossible journey in search for ‘The Voice’.
WHY THE SUNTEC CITY CONSULTANTS WANTED TO GET RID OF ME?
Massimo asked me, “Why the Suntec consultants do not like you?”
Sunflower Chong Sun Wah was not supposed to be in the picture just like UOB Plaza. I had spoil all their good planning to get their own contractors on board. The best way to punish me was to let Permasteelisa knows that they have to get rid of me before the contract was awarded to them. So the only way Permasteelisa can do was to get DP architect stating that Permasteelisa was not qualified for the tender. The key shareholder whose son was the architect had fired the Project Manager Mr Arthur Moss because he had arranged the meeting on my behalf to meet up with his boss Mr Paul Tong who is one of the shareholder’s man in charge.
When I met Mr Paul Tong in Hong Kong together with Clive Niedeck I gave Mr Tong the assurance of our capabilities in handling such a massive project although we are new kid on the block. I told him when Permasteelisa get the contract we will be the one with the lowest tender and I elaborated how we were going to achieve it. On the other hand, I told Permasteelisa to secure the contract for Suntec the pricing must be much lower because the whole market were aware of our pricing for the UOB Plaza. They were not be able to get the same profit margin but they will still be able to have a good profit.
Curtain-walling is a new game in town and UOB is the first project with such an installation works. Permasteelisa did not have a proper office in Singapore therefore the Suntec City team of consultants refused to invite them for the tender but stubborn or determine me, I was all out to prove them wrong!
Building industry is a dirty game has been and always will be, hence to cut the story short, for me to get the project on behalf for Permasteelisa I had to get the attention of the Project manager of the project manager Mr. Arthur Moss. In Sun Tze before you go for war you have to understand all the orientation or background of the respective shareholders from Hong Kong and SUNTEC CITY got five shareholders and this was the challenge. I need to do my homework first before I begin the battle because in Singapore it is not so simply just submit your tender and wait for fairness to take it rightful place! It is all a big game or a war but NO ONE CAN SEE because Singapore image worldwide CLEAN AS A WHISTLE! I always love a good challenge or fight especially when all the top guys gang up to put me down:)
The first thing I did was to arrange Permasteelisa General Manager, Mr. Des Rice to meet up with Mr. Arthur Moss to give him a better understanding how we are progressing in UOB Plaza project. Meanwhile, I have already open all my cards to Mr Arthur Moss on how I have secured the UOB Plaza project and how much Permasteelisa had made it with a clean profit of almost $40Million. He was in total surprised but once I share with him the secret he realize then the curtain wall consultant must not come out with his own design instead to allow the respective contractor to come out with their own. Therefore the job of the curtain walling consultant was to check of the credibility of the design.
I had shown him the factory of Permasteelisa in Jurong so on and so fore, to give him the confidently that we could handle a big project like Suntec City and when we win the tender. I told him how much I can bring the cost down due to our good planning right from the start. He was very impressed with my knowledge of the industry and this was because my ex-husband George Y. Habib was an aluminum contractor in Abu Dhabi. We also visited the smelting plant of Showa Aluminum in Japan and that was where I have learnt the secret the costing, (if not do you think I can sit in front of the UOB architect there and then reduce $9Million with a stroke!) My teacher had told us when people talked you just listen and I did nothing but only listen when they talk and that was how I learn in this ‘Life University’’. In short, Almighty God had sown the seed in my heart and I must keep walking until I realise my dream to bring world harmony.
