The 4th April marks the 2nd anniversary of the murder of Juliano Mer Khamis, outside the Freedom Theatre that he worked to establish, in the heart of Jenin Refugee Camp. Here, Nabil Alraee, who followed in Juliano’s footsteps as the theatre’s Artistic Director, speaks from the rehearsal space of his new play, Suicide Note From Palestine, about the reality of making theatre in such conditions, and about his belief in art as a powerful tool against fear.

Goodbye Juliano.
Jeff Stewart (Notes) on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 5:54am

It is with great sadness, and a heavy heart that I say goodbye to Juliano Mer-Khamis, a Jewish Palestinian man born in Nazareth who made the “shift of mind” and took up the Palestinian cause. I first met Juliano at his “Freedom Theater” in the Jenin refugee camp in 2005, then interviewed, and included him in my short film in 2007. He treated me like I was a world class filmmaker. He toured me throughout the Freedom Theater, and gave me a first rate interview. I maintained periodic e-mail contact with him, and despite the demands on his time he encouraged me in my filmmaking endeavors.

This was the gift that Juliano gave.

It was his great experience, and is ability to see greatness in everyone.

It does not – I repeat- it does not make any difference what is your religion, who you are or where you are from, if you choose to fight the good fight, and you choose it with your heart and soul you are of the greatest human spirit!

Goodbye, Juliano
