Some early Christians believed Jesus was married, a Harvard professor told the 10th International Congress of Coptic Studies, according to the Harvard Gazette.
Professor Karen King, who teaches at Harvard Divinity School, announced the existence of an ancient Coptic text on papyrus including the words: “Jesus said to them, my wife.”
“Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married, even though no reliable historical evidence exists to support that claim,” she told the congress in Rome.
“This new gospel doesn’t prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage.
“From the very beginning, Christians disagreed about whether it was better not to marry, but it was over a century after Jesus’ death before they began appealing to Jesus’ marital status to support their positions,” she added.
The reference to an earthly partner for Christ is definitely not in line with what many Christians believe, but those common beliefs are undocumented, King stressed.
“The four words that appear on the fragment translate to ‘Jesus said to them, my wife,'” the report went on.
The words, written in Coptic, a language of Egyptian Christians, are on a papyrus fragment of about one and a half inches by three inches (3.8 centimeters to 7.6 centimeters), it said.
While several experts agree the yellowish brown papyrus is authentic, “final judgment on the fragment depends on further examination by colleagues and further testing, especially of the chemical composition of the ink,” according to King.
BOSTON (Reuters) – A previously unknown scrap of ancient papyrus written in ancient Egyptian Coptic includes the words “Jesus said to them, my wife,” — a discovery likely to renew a fierce debate in the Christian world over whether Jesus was married.
The existence of the fourth-century fragment — not much bigger than a business card — was revealed at a conference in Rome on Tuesday by Karen King, Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
“Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married, even though no reliable historical evidence exists to support that claim,” King said in a statement released by Harvard.
“This new gospel doesn’t prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage.”
Despite the Catholic Church’s insistence that Jesus was not married, the idea resurfaces on a regular basis, notably with the 2003 publication of Dan Brown’s best-seller “The Da Vinci Code,” which angered many Christians because it was based on the idea that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had children.
King said the fragment, unveiled at the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies, provided the first evidence that some early Christians believed Jesus had been married.
Roger Bagnall, director of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in New York, said he believed the fragment, which King has called “The Gospel of Jesus’s wife,” was authentic.
But further examination will be made by experts, as well as additional testing of the papyrus fragment, described as brownish-yellow and tattered. Of particular interest will be the chemical composition of the ink.
The fragment is owned by an anonymous private collector who contacted King to help translate and analyze it, and is thought to have been discovered in Egypt or perhaps Syria.
King said that it was not until around 200 A.D. that claims started to surface, via the theologian known as Clement of Alexandria, that Jesus did not marry.
“This fragment suggests that other Christians of that period were claiming that he was married” but does not provide actual evidence of a marriage, she said.
“Christian tradition preserved only those voices that claimed Jesus never married. The ‘Gospel of Jesus’s Wife’ now shows that some Christians thought otherwise.”
King’s analysis of the fragment is slated for publication in the Harvard Theological Review in January 2013. She has posted a draft of the paper, and images of the fragment, on the Harvard Divinity School website:

A New Testament scholar proves what the Quran said about the bible 1400 years ago

Bart D. Ehrman is an American New Testament scholar and textual critic of early Christianity. He is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ehrman recounts his personal experience with the study of the Bible and textual criticism. He describes an early Christian environment in which the books that would later compose the New Testament were copied by hand, mostly by Christian amateurs. Ehrman concludes that various early scribes altered the New Testament texts. Ehrman contends that certain widely-held Christian beliefs, such about the divinity of Jesus, are associated not with the original words of scripture but with these later alterations.
He proofs what the Quran says about the Bible and the scribes who altered and changed the words of God in the bible.

Ehrman takes you on a journey to the ancient world and the forgery battles that have raged through the centuries. Ehrman contends that the New Testament is riddled with contradictions about the life of Jesus and his significance. He has provided compelling evidence that early Christianity was a collection of competing schools of thought and that the central doctrines we know today were the inventions of theologians living several centuries after Christ. Ehrman is a distinguished and prominent religious scholar, and has also appeared on NPR, “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

Dr. Maurice Bucaille’s Book: “The Bible The Qur’an and Science”
Published on Aug 10, 2009 by MuslimByChoice
How does the Qur’an approach to science?
Is there a conflict between Islam and science?
What should Muslim attitude be toward science and technology?
Dr. Maurice Bucaille was an eminent French surgeon, scientist, scholar and author of ”THE BIBLE, THE QURAN AND SCIENCE” which contains the result of his research into the Judeo-Christian Revelation and the Quran. It is a unique contribution in the field of religion and science.
In his book, The Bible, The Qur’an and Science, Bucaille aims to prove the Qur’an is in agreement with scientific facts, while the Bible is not. He shows how Islam, science and religion have always been “twin sisters”. According to Bucaille, there are monumental errors of science in the Bible and not a single error in the Quran, whose descriptions of natural phenomena make it compatible with modern science. Bucaille concludes that the Qur’an is the reliable word of God.
Being an outstanding Scientist, he was elected to treat the mummy of Merneptah (Pharaoh) which he did.
During his visit to Saudi Arabia he was shown the verses of the Holy Quran in which Allah says that the dead body of the Pharaoh will be preserved as a ”Sign” for posterity. An impartial scientist like Dr. Bucaille, who (being also a Christian) was converstant with the Biblical version of Pharaoh’s story as being drowned in pursuit of Prophet Moses.
He was pleasantly surprised to learn that unknown to the world till only of late, the Holy Quran made definite prediction about the preservation of the body of that same Pharaoh of Moses time.
This led Dr. Bucaille to study the Holy Quran thoroughly after learning the Arabic language. The final conclusion of his comparative study of Quran and the Bible is that the statements about scientific phenomena in the Holy Quran are perfectly in conformity with the modern sciences whereas the Biblical narrations on the same subjects are scientifically entirely unacceptable.
The Topic: The Quran and Modern Science: Holy Scriptures Examined in the Light of Modern Knowledge ”
A talk by Dr. Maurice Bucaille
In this lecture, Dr. Maurice Bucaille clears away many preconceived ideas about the Old Testament, the Gospel and the Quran.
He tries in this collection of Writings to separate what belongs to Revelation from what is the product of error or human interpretation. His study sheds new light on the Holy Scriptures. At the end of the gripping account, he places the believer before a point of cardinal importance: the continuity of the revelation emanating from the same God, with modes of expression that differ in the course of time.
