Sunflower,

Could you please remove my company contact information from your Article: Ads Against Apartheid . I was unaware that my company information was posted in your article. While we did receive many emails thanking us for running the campaign, we must have our information removed. Unfortunately, we have had all of our company vehicles vandalized and received threats because of this campaign and are no longer able to continue the campaign. I personally would greatly appreciate your removal of our information for personal and company safety reasons. Thank you for your cooperation.

Remove the information listed below:

“You can reach the xxxx, which ran the truck billboards, at xxxx. You can reach Billboard Connection, which ran the “junior” billboards at xxxx”

Sincerely,

Ads Against Apartheid Condemns Attack on Ads in Los Angeles

Dear supporter of Palestinian human rights,

Ads Against Apartheid (AAA) strongly condemns attacks on its advertising campaign, which include vandalism against its partner, a local mobile billboard truck company. In a related incident, an individual stopped the truck, yelled at the driver, and spray-painted a Star of David on the vehicle. The mobile billboard company finally pulled the ads after receiving death threats and reporting $25,000 in damages.

The advertisements involved highlighted the late Nelson Mandela’s support for Palestinian freedom.

Attacks on freedom of speech against Palestine solidarity activists are becoming increasingly common in the United States. From the suspension of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) for organizing a pro-Palestinian political group at Northeastern University to the firing of University of Illinois professor Dr. Steven Salaita for tweeting his outrage over Israeli attacks in Gaza last summer, there has been a crackdown on political dissent and freedom of expression related to criticism of Israel.Richard Colbath-Hess, board member of Ads Against Apartheid, stated, “these acts of violence reflect a broader context of criminalizing and censoring free speech when it comes to opposing US-sponsored funding for Israeli apartheid.”

Ads Against Apartheid is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about Israeli human rights violations in occupied Palestinian territory. It was created to counter the mainstream media narrative about Israel/Palestine, and to expose Americans to the reality on the ground for Palestinians. Millions of Palestinians live under direct military rule and have no citizenship. Those Palestinians with Israeli citizenship suffer significant economic and institutional discrimination. The US government supplies Israel with $3 billion in military aid through US taxpayer dollars each year.

Ads Against Apartheid + Los Angeles

Dear supporter of Palestinian human rights,

Ads Against Apartheid (AAA) just launched its first campaign in Los Angeles, California! It will run on more than 30 small billboards and trucks across the city over a period of two months. The ads, which highlight South African liberation leader Nelson Mandela’s powerful statement of solidarity with the Palestinian people, represent AAA’s first effort on the West Coast.

This new campaign comes at a critical time in the region. Palestinians, particularly those in Jerusalem, are facing some of the worst repression in years. Excessive use of force by the Israeli police, rapidly increasing settler violence, and restrictions on access to the Haram Al-Sharif have lead Palestinian communities all over Israel/Palestine to protest, and in a few tragic instances, to commit acts of violence.

“It is important for Americans to understand where Palestinians’ frustration comes from,” Ads Against Apartheid board member Richard Colbath-Hess explained. “Israel is applying increasingly brutal force as it seeks to maintain the horribly unjust status quo, but there is no security-based solution to what is, at it’s core, a civil and human rights problem.”

The Artwork for AAA’s Los Angeles ad campaign showcases Nelson Mandela’s famous quote: “Our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”

Palestinians residents of Jerusalem live under a different set of laws from their Jewish counterparts. They are forbidden from voting in national elections, and their residency status – and with it their right to live in Israel/Palestine – may be revoked if the government discovers that they maintain a residence elsewhere. The Jerusalem municipality also assigns the city’s highest tax rate, usually reserved for the wealthiest residents, to predominantly Palestinian neighborhoods while leaving them drastically underserved.

“Keeping people under separate sets of laws based on the race, religion and geographic location is a central component of apartheid,” Colbath-Hess said. “Nelson Mandela recognized that, and we hope Americans will too.”

We are asking that people send short emails to the two advertising companies with whom we worked in LA, thanking them for accepting ads that express support for Palestinians.

You can find maps showing the locations of our ads here and here.

Our Ad in Metro Boston

Ads Against Apartheid’s ad in Boston’s Metro newspaper asks Americans how they feel about paying for Israel’s war on Gaza.

Our ad, which ran in the June 24th edition of the Boston Metro newspaper
Since July 8th, Israel has killed 599 Palestinans, including at least 443 civilians, 143 of whom were children. They have forced over 120,000 people out of their homes, damaged 90 schools, and left 1.2 million human beings without access to drinking water. This year, $3.1 billion of our tax dollars have directly funded Israel’s military actions. When did it become acceptable for our tax dollars to be used to create a humanitarian crisis for an entire civilian population?
Can you help?

  1. Visit the campaign page and add your names to the two very important petitions linked at the bottom.
  2. We would love it if you would share our tweets and Facebook posts about this ad.
